I’m not into traditional Valentine’s Day celebrations. It’s a day when you feel obligated to overspend, can’t find a dinner reservation and there are odd expectations to live up to. I appreciate the idea of Valentine’s Day, to express love and affection, but I prefer to keep it low key and celebrate my friends too!
Matt and I decided that we’ll probably get tacos from our favorite taco truck and watch HBO at my house, my kind of date night! Read on for some Valentine’s date/celebration and gift ideas:
Date Ideas
To skip overspending and the dinner crowd, try a breakfast date! Maybe that’s cooking together at home or going out to your favorite diner. Or a coffee date. That’s something Matt and I enjoy doing together, we just have to put our phones away (mostly me distracted on my phone.)
And I think Valentine’s could be a great excuse for a spontaneous trip. Perhaps it’s one night at a hotel together, a road trip or something more extravagant, whatever it is, I think V-Day is great excuse to make more time for each other and escape!
Instead of something more formal and stuffy, you try a bowling date night or go out ice skating–or catch a live game (I never thought I’d enjoy hockey games in person, but we’ve gone to three Red Wings games and I’m HOOKED now.)
Or you could do what Matt and I plan to do: grab your favorite takeout and find a series or movie to watch together.
V-Day Gift Ideas
I don’t need an excuse to shop for myself, but this has given me good reason to shop my favorite shops’ Valentine’s blush-colored gift guides. Why not? Like this pink SWELL bottle! This pink one speaks to me and would be super practical. Jo Malone fragrances are just so luxurious and this red roses cologne is perfect for a date night scent. These pink oversized geometric earrings are a thoughtful gift for a friend or sister (and they come in other colors, affordable and on sale)
I’m thinking I’ll treat my skin this V-day too. I’ve been dying to try this Summer Fridays mask. I could easily see myself wearing this mask while Matt and I ate tacos watching TV on V-Day (or maybe the day before so my skin is refreshed for our couch date.) Try a lip sleeping mask too. This lip balm/mask by Laneige is a nightly staple for me and I keep in my nightstand. Kissable lips is a must for the occasion.
Something a little sexier might be a bralette and they’re 40% off right now at Aerie. This blush lacey one is sweet and feminine, and something you’ll actually wear. I basically live in workout gear and so Matt wouldn’t be surprised if I just wore a cute sports bra or crop top around the house–definitely cuter than an oversized sherpa pullover with oversized plaid pants (wore that all last weekend.) Just LOVE this sports bra/crop top and it comes in many colors.

A spontaneous trip, yes please! All the restaurants are booked fully now anyway. Nothing like a good surprise! 🙂
