The classic trench coat isn’t a typical outerwear choice for me. It’s usually too traditional and sophisticated for my particular taste, but this one is slightly oversized with a modern edge, AND it was on major sale, letting me try a new designer and try out a trench coat this spring.
And I’ve been spotting new, modern takes on the trench coat that I can’t help but shop. From unexpected prints to fresh silhouettes and fabric choices, there are actually many out there for the non-trench coat wearers like me to love. But more on that later.
I spotted this cool trench at Raggs Boutique last Monday when Brooke and I visited. It was about an hour away from Lansing and worth the drive, so many great pieces to shop and an incredible sale with coats, dresses and separates. Cindy who owns Raggs is close with Celeste who owns Retail Therapy where I do freelance work and so it was nice to finally meet her and visit her story in Holly, Michigan. Worth the drive there, Michigan folk!

I’m not a big fan of dressing up for the office. And so I find ways to step up my professional style that feels like me, and maintaining all the comfort that leggings and sweatshirts bring me. I love a graphic tee with cozy wide legs pants that can easily be dressed up or down with the shoe choice.
Obvi, my favorite trench is this one from Raggs (originally $318 and I got for $111!) But there are some super cute styles to shop online like this classic midi trench. It comes with no belt, which I like for some reason. And I’m also a fan of this linen version from Zara, perfect for summer. Lastly, I’m a huge fan of animal print and this leopard print coat is on sale (half off!) and would pair nicely with my neutral wardrobe.
I love a cropped wide leg pant and these pecan colored Madewell pants are just what I need for spring. Plus, they’re 40% off, and so are these khaki color pants! I bought a couple pair from Target too that fit like a dream. Love these crop pants in black and olive! Also like these wide leg palazzo pants from Target!
The graphic tee I’m wearing is one I was eyeing online for a couple months, but I didn’t want to spend $60 on it, but then I realized how often I wear the few others that are my favorite in my closet and it’s totally worth it–and it’s already proven to be a closet staple. I’ve styled it with leggings tied up in front, tucked into these wide leg pants for a night out and tucked in with striped pants for work last week! I also like simple tees with small writing or embroidery like this one on sale at Express. And Urban Outfitters always has a great selection, plus they have a St. Patricks sale running, 17% off!
I love a simple mule like these from Dolce Vita a few years back. Dolce Vita has a similar pair on sale, these $52 mules or this cool suede pair.

Personally, I prefer the classic trenchcoat, I’ve always had issues with people thinking I’m younger than I actually am (not like oh people think I’m a year or two younger, no, I mean people telling a restaurant manager to ask for my ID because the waiters had served me beer and they thought I was 12 when I was actually 21 lol) so I prefer a more mature style but I still like to have fun with the clothes I wear and I’m happy to see brands venture out and deconstruct the classic trenchcoat and give people more space to express their creativity.
