I’ve lived in older, closed off homes for the majority of my life and moving into this house felt like a bit of a challenge even with some definition in the space. But I’ve used furniture, rugs and other tricks to create defined spaces in my home. Read on for ideas to do the same in your home:
Use Groupings of Furniture
Putting together groupings like furnishings and decor help create a designated space. I’ve done this throughout my house, but especially with the family room and dining room. I kept that family room space around the fireplace pretty tight with my blue velvet couch and chair, using the couch to divide the space, adding more of a physical divide with adding the black media console.
Incorporate Color!
I used color in a couple ways in my home–in the furniture, accent colors and wall color. My living room is right next to the family room and while there’s a half wall on either side with glass pocket doors to physically add a divide, it still felt like an awkward space where at first I didn’t know how I’d achieve different vibes in each space.
To help create two separate spaces, the living room was painted a soft off-white with neutral furniture and more comfy decor incorporating more tans and leathers while the family room has the blue furniture with gold accents. The living room’s color is Sherwin William’s pearly white and not sure what the grey is in the rest of the house, but it’s a pretty light grey.
Add a Rug
I love rug (said in Brick’s voice from Anchorman.) I have them in almost every room as I love the texture they add to each room along with effectively defining spaces. Since everything is pretty neutral in my home, I like to choose print rugs to add some color and texture to what I consider to be a pretty boring base of grey floors and grey walls.
I have this oriental rug in the dining room, a similar rug to this cream textured rug in family room and this print rug from Amazon in the living room. For more information on the decor choices and links visit this blog post and this post. This post too for details in dining room.
