It’s almost sweater weather and it’s that time of the year where I start transitioning my closet from summer to fall, take inventory of what I have and what I should let go of, and what needs mending!
Prep for a Closet Edit
I like to set aside time on a Sunday with bins and bags ready to go to sort through what is going back in my closet, what I might give friends and family and what to sell on Poshmark and what I donate.
Generally, if it’s been two years since I’ve worn something, I just let it go. Most times, if it’s been under a year, but I know it’s not for me, I’ll say goodbye sooner. I don’t feel guilty letting go of things easily since my mom and family members love my clothes and I have a few friends who love to shop my closet too, giving everything another life beyond my closet.
I also have to review the bins of winter/fall shoes and accessories I’ve put away and see what I’m keeping or getting rid of. I’ve just started this process along with culling pieces from guest closets (where I store my off season clothing) I no longer wear.
Identify Missing Pieces
After the closet edit, I’ll think through what’s missing from my closet and what are some of my wishlist items. I’ve identified a couple gap so far and filled them with more affordable options like suede driving shoes and a vintage Gucci bag in chocolate suede since I’m hard on my clothes, shoes and accessories. I feel like I don’t need much now that I’ve stocked up a few oversized sweaters from Target and H&M.
Get Shoes, Clothes and Accessories Professionally Cleaned + Fixed
I’m always more motivated to get my shoes and such cared for at the start of the season so tis the season to resole boots, send jackets to the dry cleaning and fix the pile of clothes I love that need mending.
I’ve made a couple trips to the cobbler getting bags repaired and boots resoled. I highly recommend John’s Shoe Repair in Lansing. I’ve been going there for years!
I also look at what needs mending like a pair of pants with a rip in the seam (I have one pair to fix) or pieces that need to be dry cleaned like blazers.
