ย The guest room at my house has been neglected for almost four years because once I updated the rest of the house, I didn’t have a bit of energy to paint the poop brown walls or update the furniture that I hated in the space.
This room also became Matt’s room and because we didn’t have proper storage, clothes were everywhere and the room was just a hot mess. Luckily, it didn’t take much money, effort or time to transform it.
Updating the Guest Room on a Budget
This room has been the bane of my existence and it’s quickly transformed to my favorite room in the house and it only took $500 to get there (this includes furniture that I so desperately needed!) I partnered with Wayfair to update this room and the total came to just over $400 for the tall white dresser, tangerine oriental rug, oversized velvet pillows and the knit blanket.
And here’s a breakdown of each of these items:
Theย four drawer dresser is amazing–for getting it under $180 on sale, the quality is great and it works perfectly in the space. Assembly was required so have patience (or pay an additional fee for assembly!) I had a hard time picking the dresser since there are so many great options at Wayfair.
The oriental rug is by far my favorite purchase. It was such an amazing price and I love the muted colors and texture it adds to the room. It’s thin and has a smell that needs a day to air out, but would buy this in other colors for other rooms!
Velvet throw pillows are so fluffy and soft and great quality.
The knit blanket I think is priced higher than it should be and the color was off from the color in the photo which was disappointing. I would recommend this blanket based off reviews instead!
I also bought some new wall decor to go above the bed and a table top clock which brings my total to just under $500. It’s worth noting that I did eventually order a white panel headboard for the bed from Wayfair which brings my total to $600 BUT I’m having issues with shipping and may not even need it.
Free Ways to Update the Space
The first thing I needed to do to transform the space was paint the walls, but I didn’t want to spend a dime and decided to be a little resourceful and check the stock of paint in the basement from the previous owners–and I found the dark grey slate color that they painted the bathroom and dining room. And I had a roller and paint brush–all set!
I also shopped my home for decor pieces, going through boxes in the basement to find items to repurpose and going room to room to find items to pull to finish the decor. I pulled faux plants, candles, baskets and a vase with pampas grass along with books and light fixtures I had retired to the basement. I also found a wooden stool that I repurposed as a night stand.
A key part of the refresh though? Rearranging the room and removing furniture. From changing the position of the bed to removing the large headboard and a sad brown bench, the room feels more open and spacious–and inviting!
