My summer hair care routine is always about easy, effortless and low maintenance since Michigan humidity will do its thing and I just roll with the punches and embrace my natural waves!
My Hair
My hair is naturally curly, thick and coarse, but I’ve lost a lot of that curl due to age and Brazilian blowout keratin treatments which I’m actually due for now. So now it’s more of a slight wave and the hair in these photos is a product of half blow dry and the products, mixed with some humidity. I try to embrace my natural texture during the summer since it’s easier than fighting it and so I usually skip curling it with curling iron and trying to make it look more smooth.
My Cleansing/Prep Routine
I wash it about every six days using two shampoos that help deep clean my hair and relieve my scalp. Since I have so much hair, double shampooing is a necessity and I truly love these products that I bought on a whim to try. The shampoos include Aveda scalp benefits and Living Proof triple detox shampoo.
The Aveda shampoo is light and smells earthy, can work up a good lather. And Living Proof is black, thick shampoo that I generally use first and follow up with Aveda second. I have a dry scalp and build up so I love this combo to truly clean my hair and scalp. I also use this scalp brush to exfoliate my scalp. LOVE this thing!
After I wash it, I might use Unite detangler spray followed by Aveda Brilliant emollient finishing gloss that I focus on the frizzy ends. Next, I apply Aveda Speed of Light which speeds up blow dry time and acts as a heat protectant.
Next, I use my Babyliss Pro blowdryer with this Yves Durif vented brush to blow dry 50-75% and then let the rest air dry.
Day to Day Routine
Day to day, I’ll brush out my ends a bit (never fully the whole head and I’ll use my fingers if I need to detangle since brushing makes my hair fuzzy) Add a shine spray if my hair is on the cleaner side or a texture spray if it’s dirtier.
I love a texturizing spray and I find myself using this more and more. This is especially useful to me when my hair is super clean or super dirty. I spray it on the mid section to ends of my hair for a more tousled, lived in look. When my hair is super dirty, I brush it all the way through, apply Living Proof PhD dry shampoo on greasy sections of my roots and then spray texturizing spray on the ends again. This process ALWAYS revives my dirty hair on day 5 and day 6!
For texturizing spray, I love Oribe dry texturizing spray, Kevin Murphy bedroom hair and most recently, Kristin Ess working texture spray. These all smell good and work really well on my thick, course hair but love the price tag on the Kristin Ess product. At $14, it’s the most affordable.

You don’t use a conditioner?

Yes I do, but I wanted to focus this on newer products I’ve been using to address specific issues. I use Aveda conditioner and Brazilian Blowout conditioning mask.
