I recently photographed Sparrow Bloom Co.‘s holiday arrangement and tablescape styling and as expected, the arrangement was autumnal perfection and the tablescape was beautifully executed and I knew I wanted Becca and Kait, the duo behind Sparrow Bloom Co., to share their secrets here as their work has inspired me so much.
Fun fact: Kait is from my super small west Michigan town and we were a few years apart, but it was great to reconnect when I lived in the same neighborhood as her in Lansing, and order pretty flowers to treat myself over the summer when they kicked their business off. Read on for their thrifty tips and timeless style to recreate a tablescape on a budget:
Meet Sparrow Bloom Co.
Hi, we’re best friends, Becca + Kait, who’ve combined our love of gardening + floral design to create something magical right in the middle of downtown Lansing. Our designs at Sparrow Bloom Co. are inspired by our beautiful, tiny backyard garden and filled with lots of lush greenery. We love to create elegant bouquets with lots of texture and movement.
One thing that we’ve always had in common is being incredibly thrifty. We love hunting down a good deal! When it comes to creating a tablescape for the holidays, it’s no different. We want something that’s simple, cozy, and inspired by nature.
How to Recreate this Timeless, Natural Tablescape
When putting together our styled shoot with Andrea, we browsed Pinterest so we could have a clear vision in mind for what we wanted to create, so when we started gathering items, there was no grabbing random things off the shelf and not knowing how we’d use them.
Once we had our plan, we hit the thrift store. We knew that we were looking for matching candlesticks, which we were thrilled when we found the perfect natural wood ones for less than $7 total. Some other really affordable styles that we love are gold, metal, and stoneware candlesticks. We were looking for some really simple, timeless pieces.
Another important part of styling a table for the holidays, a party, or any event is to invest in some timeless pieces. We knew that we would be doing more styled shoots in the future, so we invested in some classic pieces that we would use for years to come.
A classic tablecloth is the perfect base for a table, but we weren’t picky about what it looked liked, our only requirement was that it would be reused at future events. You could find something at a thrift store, at HomeGoods, or just stick with a classic white table cloth that you can use no matter what the occasion.
Layering simple white salad and dinner plates was perfect and we added natural chargers that could be changed out in the future if we wanted, as well as some fun cloth napkins. We absolutely loved these simple napkins that added a pop of color, but they didn’t make it too busy. Plus we saved money by knotting the napkins and put our own touch on it by adding some greenery and flowers.
Obviously, one thing that we love to bring into our designs are natural elements. Every piece was intentional, from the wood candlesticks to the woven chargers, stems of greenery on the table to tiny flowers tucked into the napkins, and pumpkins adorning the table. These little touches of greenery, flowers, and pumpkins all cost less than $5. All of it complimented and pointed to the star of the show…the centerpiece!
Remember, every piece is intentional. Don’t just run to the store and grab every cute little holiday knickknack you can find. Invest in pieces that are timeless. Change out smaller things that can add a pop of color and always bring in nature. It sets the mood for a cozy environment so you can sit around the table laughing and telling stories with your loved ones.
