Since starting my new job in August, I’ve struggled with balancing just about everything. I went from working from home 2-3 days a week where I could easily fit in a variety of work outs at different times to a more rigid schedule and the stress that comes with a new job. I want fitness to be a top priority, but work and school must come first. And so I needed to streamline and simplify my routine. I made the decision last month to focus my workouts at FLEXcity Fitness because it’s my favorite, I never get bored and I feel the best after their classes. The best part? It’s a couple minute walk from my office.
Instead of working out 5-6 days a week, I hold myself accountable to at least three, preferably four workouts a week. Three of these are at FLEX with the fourth work out at the YMCA on my own. It’s what’s realistic and manageable for me. Tips for fitting in fitness:
- Plan ahead. Each weekend, I take a look at my work and personal calendars and schedule out my workout classes. I add these classes to my calendar and for the most part, half of my workouts are the same time and place each week, creating a little bit of routine, which I like and is easier to stick to.
- Get your friends there. My friends and I actually all love FLEX so it makes it easier to hold myself accountable because I’ll get called out if I keep flaking out on workouts with them. They also keep me competitive and trying harder so I can keep up with the likes of my friend Ashley with her fast paces on the treadmill and perfect push ups.
- Carve out some time each day for physical activity. On the days I can’t work out, I make my lazy ass walk to lunch and take James on longer walks after work. It’s not as great as a cardio class, but it’s better than nothing! And you can multitask, like take a phone call or answer emails simultaneously. Boom.
My goals (once I have a break from grad school) is to incorporate a little yoga just for some zen and push myself a little harder at the workouts I can fit in..which I’m currently struggling with. What are your fitness goals?

For something that leaves us all sweaty and looking not the best these are some really beautiful photographs. It's hard to balance it but you are smart to make it a priority. I just started to kind of enjoy working out. It's a really wonderful thing when you start to liiiike it! However my schedule too has become hectic. I'm waiting for a break in the craziness and then I plan on finding a routine again. Good for you for making it work! 🙂
