I’ll admit it, I spoil James. His food dish travels to the couch or up to my bed if that’s where I’m eating so that we can enjoy our meals together. He has a slew of fancy sweaters and jackets to choose from when it’s a bit chilly for his liking. And James has an array of toys to choose from when he’s bored or when pup friends come over to play. But when it comes to his food, I’m simply giving him what he needs to be happy and healthy and meet the needs of the pickiest dog ever (much like me.)
Feeding James as a Puppy
Even as a puppy, James feigned interest in food. It didn’t motivate him to roll over or shake and he sure didn’t care for it when it sat in his dish for breakfast or dinner. It started to concern me that he wouldn’t eat much of his food, even when I hand-fed him. Growing up, my childhood pups ate anything and everything and were largely motivated by food. This was new territory for me. I made multiple trips to grocery stores and pet food shops to explore food options and I finally discovered Freshpet. It looked appetizing to me and I figured if it looked good enough for me, James may just enjoy it too.
The first time I fed him Freshpet, I was so relieved. He ate it up! He was also able to put on some much-needed weight and this small adjustment to his diet changed everything. He was finally interested in his meals and that comforted me knowing he was eating enough and that it was high-quality food.
Feeding James Now
James is now four and still eats his Freshpet chicken recipe every meal along with a mix of dry food. He won’t touch the bowl with his dry food until his beloved Freshpet has been added to the mix. He loves the chicken recipe and I just started to give him the tender beef recipe which comes with shredded potatoes and vitamin-rich green beans and carrots. He loves it.
I’ve noticed that when I feed him Freshpet, put his dish on something soft like my living room rug (or my bed) and I’m nearby, he’ll gobble up his food. He’s a social eater who wants his person nearby and he loves to nibble on his meals on his rug or in his dog bed, which I keep in the living room next to the rug! Just small changes to his food and how he gets it ensures he eats at every meal.
Why I choose Freshpet
James has been eating Freshpet for almost four years and it was the catalyst to improving his health. It’s all natural and it’s the next best thing if you’re like me and don’t have the time, energy or desire to prepare homemade dog food. There are no additives or preservatives and no by-product meals. Just fresh meat and veggies!
Thanks to Freshpet for sponsoring this post. Check out Freshpet refrigerated pet food, made in small batches with fresh ingredients and no artificial preservatives.

Wow, that is very nice of you to let James eat on a fur blanket on the couch with you! My dog has always been a picky eater, but we ended up just garnishing her dry food with people food. She’s 18 and has always been a healthy weight, so it’s worked out.
