Since pretty dresses have never been quite my thing, I find other ways to style work-appropriate looks. I prefer oversized silhouettes, neutral tones and lots of layers–with maybe a pop of color during the gloomy winter months.
Pants for Winter
I wore something similar to this last week at work–and wore this on my day off on Monday. I need no reason to be extra. When it’s cold, I like to trade in my maxi dresses for pants or leggings, but something a little cooler and more elevated than just boring dress pants.
My winter pant rotation usually consists of a few wide leg cropped pants like these flowy Topshop trousers or these olive wide leg pants on sale, cozy versatile joggers to dress up or down, these SPANX faux leather moto leggings and a wild card like these Madewell velvet overalls (I have my fair share of overalls from Z Supply, but loving these plus they’re on sale.)
Oversized Layering
Nothing can compete with this Gershon Bram long cardigan/coat layer from Retail Therapy, but I also like this sale Free People cardigan in grey and camel. For that extra slouchy look, size up one or two sizes. That’s really how I order all my sweaters and cardigans now.
And this Topshop honeycomb sleeved cardigan is half off, just $36 and available in neutral colors that will match virtually anyone’s wardrobe. Lastly, this long duster cardigan closely resembles what I’m wearing and I feel like I need this one too. When you know a style you like, you might as well get several similar pieces!
Incorporating Functional, Chic Accessories
Of course, shoes and winter accessories can make all the difference in completing a look functionally and style-wise.
A classic ankle boot is the most essential footwear piece in my winter wardrobe because of its versatility. And since I wear a lot of black in the winter, it helps create a seamless look that is flattering and lengthening for my 5’4″ frame. For a little more height, I appreciate wedge booties like these TOMS booties on sale.
I love a scarf that adds a little color and texture like the one I’m wearing and this $24 knit scarf is a bit more subtle, but I love the color combination, texture and price. I love gem toned fur scarves and this shorter fur scarf is such a statement piece.

Really like both your pants and your boots! And your scarf is absolutely gorgeous ! I don’t know if I’d be daring enough to wear it (or if I’d know what to pair it with) but it looks absolutely amazing with this outfit !
