For day two adventuring around Leland with Ashley, I changed from my yoga clothes and sweatshirt tunic into..sweatpant overalls! I wear these when traveling all the time. They’re perfect for a road trip, cruising around northern Michigan in a bicycle and really any low key occasion.
I can’t wait to share more about the trip (coming next week!) but did want to share one quick outfit and why I love to wear this on repeat, and how I packed for a spring trip to Leland.
The Equally Functional + Fun Outfit
I love overalls in any fabric and silhouette–I own them all probably, but for a trip to explore the Leland area and beyond in northern Michigan, I wanted it to feel like sweatpants, but look cuter, especially surrounded by stylish bloggers during this retreat at Leland Lodge.
I have these Z Supply overalls in two colors and I don’t know how I’d survive transitional seasons without them. I bought them last fall and they were perfect for chilly nights and warmer days and with spring, they work equally as great.
I threw my new favorite tee that I think I’ve already worn on the blog three times, plus platform sneakers, an oversized cardigan and a wide brim hat that I unsuccessfully tried to wear during a bike ride. Everything but the hat was functional!
How I Packed for the Trip
I hate over packing. And so I challenged myself to use my carry on size luggage (even though I tossed more coat options into my back seat as back up.) I love Samsonite luggage and it’s on sale right now at Kohl’s.
What’s really helped me organize and streamline packing are packing cubes. I bought these ones off Amazon thanks to a recommendation and they’ve made the packing chore much easier (and just $21). Things fit easier in the suitcase and I pack bras/underwear in one, an outfit per bag if I have the space or like-items together. I also always type out a packing list and cross everything off once it’s in the suitcase, which helps me not forget anything!
I also highly recommend Lululemon cosmetic bags for travel. They’re high quality, a great size for trips or throwing in a gym bag and I got mine on sale, and they have the bags on sale in black right now! If you prefer a funkier cosmetics bag, Lulumeon has this print bag on sale too.
What I Packed
I studied the itinerary and thought about realistically what would work best for comfort and appropriate for the outings. We had many things on the agenda from visiting a goat farm to morning yoga to making floral arrangements. I recommend reviewing your planned activities thinking through what you’d like to have to wear for them and then narrowing down what you need from there.
I based my packing around cozy pieces I could easily mix and match for spring weather up in northern Michigan: leggings, cotton tees, a cardigan, sweatshirts, light jackets, sneakers, one pair of overalls and a few bags that would work for different occasions. And I wore almost everything I packed at some point and mixed and matched it differently than what I had planned (I usually try to plan outfits in advance for travel, I’m that OCD but I might go rogue from that plan and it works to have pieces that work interchangeably.)
Since I drove, I also kept a few extra jacket options in the car in case I needed them and this damn hat (mental note, don’t wear on windy days and/or bike riding, it WILL fly off)! It’s always easier to add in a few extras if you’re driving to your destination rather than flying! I’ve taken this hat on flights with me and it is a bitch to bring along.
