I’ve been itching for a fall camping weekend since I bought my new travel trailer last month and easily convinced Erin to drive up from Chicago for a girls weekend (with her baby Miles and my fur baby James.)
I snagged the last waterfront site available that weekend although we spent Friday and Sunday inside the camper thanks to storms and torrential downpours, but it was still worth the mini getaway. And we did make the most of our rain-free Saturday.
The Camping Weekend: Day 1
My stepdad offered to drop off the RV and set it up for me on the campsite, but didn’t get it up there until later in the evening and with the rain, we re-routed to Grand Rapids for dinner instead of making dinner on the camp site. I thought the Downtown Grand Rapids Market would be a fun choice with several dinner options and we both grabbed a Mexican dinner from Tacos El Cunado. The chorizo tacos are my jam. After we ate, we wandered the market and I grabbed some ice cream from Love’s and we drove another hour to the to Woods and Water campground in White Cloud.
Woods and Water is the campground I grew up camping with my family. Those days we used tents, but I’m more of a glamper. With the RV and a waterfront campsite overlooking the small lake, we had beautiful views of fellow campers kayaking and canoeing.
Our first night was low key and one of the things I love most about Erin beyond her humor, cute baby and down to earth personality, is her bedtime. She goes to bed early AF and wakes up early AF and when you take her from central time zone to eastern, she’s pretty much on par with my sleep schedule! So we’d go to bed around 9:30 and up around 7ish. How delightful!
The Camping Weekend: Day 2
When we woke up on Saturday, I made us a simple hash brown and spicy sausage mix with eggs and then we wandered down to the lake behind our camp site. And then we grabbed Starbucks at the nearest shop in Fremont. And since it’s fall and near many apple orchards, we spent part of the day eating donuts, petting animals and taking cute fall pics with her baby at Schwallier’s Country Basket. Kind of the perfect Michigan fall day outdoors.
Since I’m a clueless camper, my aunt and uncle, who also camp at Woods and Water, visited my site to help start a fire. Unfortunately, the wood was wet from the night before and all of our efforts were wasted and so I bought fresh dry wood from the campground. This is why I love this type of camping–I can get all my necessities from the campground shop and pee indoors and shower, just love these little amenities! Anyways, once I bought new wood, we got the fire started and roasted hot dogs.
And I can’t believe out of all the photos I took, I didn’t snap one of the new camper on the beautiful water front site! But below is a photo behind my RV with the fire pit and James in his dog bed (the rocks are too hard for James to comfortably rest LOL.)
The Best Camping Outfit (that I basically wore all weekend)
Is there a better fall camping outfit combo than leggings and a sweatshirt? I packed only leggings, joggers, crewneck sweatshirt and hoodie (and one tee.) I kept is super simple and functional, but something I could easily layer with a denim jacket for cool evenings.
I’ve been wearing this Aerie sweatshirt on repeat and think I may scoop up more while they’re 30% off and come in many colors. I love the side slits in the sweatshirt!
The Align leggings by Lululemon are hands down my favorite leggings. I have probably 10 pairs of the same version in black since I wear them so often. They’re comfortable, suck me in and never get loose or saggy. Worth the splurge.
Lastly, I wore this Madewell leather backpack throughout the weekend. It’s smaller, but still fit my camera, wallet and other essentials and it’s on sale right now with code YOUCHOOSE.
