It’s taken four years for my hair to look and feel this healthy, but let’s rewind. For years, I was bleaching every strand of hair just about every four weeks to maintain a platinum blonde look despite the damage it caused to my poor hair. In 2015, my hair started falling out in clumps due to bleach and poor hair care. My hair looked and felt like straw, and I knew I needed to make major changes to my haircare routine—including cutting back on bleach, using better hair care products like the Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Hair Care, and more.
Read on for four tips to improve your hair and more about my hair care routine:
Stop the Bleach
I stopped bleaching my hair for two years. Those were some rough years! Instead, I colored my hair to blend in the bleached hair with new growth. My hair didn’t look pretty, but the break from bleach helped my hair grow back healthy and strong.
Don’t Be Afraid of Haircuts
Because of the excessive bleaching, I had several areas of hair breakage and what hair was left was completely fried. I started getting quarterly haircuts to slowly cut out the damage. I kept my hair a little shorter during this time and after each cut, my hair started to slowly feel better and better.
Pay Attention to the Hair Products You Use (and What’s in Them)
I never paid attention to product ingredients up until a couple years ago. Today, my hair is still color treated and I pay attention to ingredients to elongate the color but also maintain the integrity of my hair. That’s why I’ve integrated Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Hair Care products into my routine. They’re fair trade certified, using organic extra virgin coconut oil and ethically sourced ingredients. Plus, there are no sulfates, parabens, phthalates or dyes. If you’re interested in trying this line, you can purchase from Target or Walmart.
Condition, Condition, Condition!
To help minimize the damage with heat tools and what little bleach my hair sees today, I make sure to regularly deep condition my hair. My hair is naturally very dry and textured, and the Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula 2 Step Hair Mask hydrates my hair—which severely cuts back on the frizz. This is a great “treat yo-self” treatment to do monthly! First, I apply the deep conditioning mask after I wash my hair. I make sure to distribute on my hair, focusing on the dry ends, and immediately apply the sealant on top of the mask and wait five minutes. I usually shave my legs or exfoliate while I wait and my hair feels so incredibly soft!
My Hair Routine Today
Now that I’ve gotten my hair back to a healthy place, I maintain it with a few of my favorite Palmer’s products. I love the Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula shampoo since it truly washes my hair and scalp, something I struggle to do with so much hair! I always shampoo twice to remove buildup, and the gentle shampoo never strips my hair or makes it feel dry. With coconut oil and keratin, my hair felt clean but also moisturized—even before adding conditioner. But I always follow it with the repairing conditioner or a deep conditioning treatment, like the 2-step hair mask or protein pack treatment.
Once I’m out of the shower, I apply the Palmer’s leave-in conditioner to my wet hair. This helps me hand comb my hair and it adds a little luster to my color-treated hair. Next, I apply the hair polisher serum. A little goes a long way, and I focus this product at the ends of my hair where it’s the driest and most prone to frizz. This product truly helps protect my hair against humidity and keeps the frizz away!
Once I’ve applied these two products, I blow dry my hair and add in a soft, loose curl. This is my process once, maybe twice a week! I’ve never been so happy and confident with my hair, and Palmer’s products has made my hair look healthier and more hydrated.
